WILLIMANTIC, Conn. (WTNH) — Scammers are trying to get your personal information by claiming you haven’t paid your utility bill.

Police are sending out the warning about this recent phone scam where the callers pretend to be an Eversource employee. The scammers say you owe them money and demand payment, asking for your personal information over the phone.

Police say the number being used is 1-888-631-5540. When investigators call back, an automated system prompts customers to call different fake Eversource divisions to make payments.

If you receive the phone call, do not give out your information over the phone to anyone, especially if you don’t know who is on the other end of the call. Hang up and call police immediately. If you’re in Willimantic, you can direct the call to Officer Daniel Rovella at 1-860-465-3135.
