WEST HAVEN, Conn. (WTNH)– The American Heart Association will hold the 2016 Greater New Haven Heart Walk on Saturday in West Haven.
The American Heart Association is the largest voluntary health organization fighting heart disease and stroke. Over 3,000 of their supporters and survivors are expected to attend the Walk on Saturday, May 7th at Savin Rock in West Haven.
The event will feature music, health screenings, a kid’s zone, and refreshments. Before the walk begins, there will be a Hands-Only CPR training provided by Griffin Hospital and the first 250 interested walkers will receive free CPR Anytime kit courtesy of the Anthem Foundation.
The American Heart Association is looking to raise over $430,000 to fund the research and education related to heart disease and stroke which is the No. 1 and No. 5 killers in the United States. Walkers who raise a minimum of $100 will receive a commemorative Heart Walk t-shirt.
In a press release, the association explained:
“Mary A. Papzian, president of Southern Connecticut State University is leading the organizational and recruitment efforts in the greater New Haven area by enlisting the assistance of thousands of volunteers, survivors, walkers, and business leaders. Ms. Papzian is asking the community to join in the mission to reduce disability and death from cardiovascular disease and stroke, the leading cause of death in the United States.
The Greater New Haven Heart Walk is part of the American Heart Association’s national healthy living initiative, My Heart. My Life. which offers a simple set of solutions that focus on improving nutrition, physical activity and children’s health. The American Heart Association is working to help individuals and families understand how to make incremental changes for a substantial long-term health impact.”
Walk registration will begin at 9:00 a.m. at Savin Rock and the walk will kick off at 10 a.m. with a walk along Savin Rock Beach.Those looking to start a walk team still have time to register to support the fundraiser.
