Veterans First Act pushes to change culture of the VA

NEW HAVEN, Conn. (WTNH) — Senator Richard Blumenthal is drawing attention to over-prescription of opioids to veterans.

Blumenthal says that many vets suffering from chronic stress and pain don’t need to be treated with powerful painkillers, which he says are addictive and easily misused and abused. He says alternative therapies like counseling, psychiatric care, and even chiropractic care should be used for pain management.

“The measure we are introducing would provide for practice guidelines, monitoring, and tracking, an opioid safety initiative, elimination of the co-pay for alternative therapies. Veterans suffer from chronic pain and they fight with all the courage and strength that they fought with on the battlefield and they need more help,” said Blumenthal.

Blumenthal says the VA can be a leader in the country for non-prescription therapies to treat post-traumatic stress.
