13 Dept. of Education employees receive layoff notices

HARTFORD, Conn. (WTNH) — 13 employees from the state Department of Education received layoff notices in an effort to reduce the state’s red ink.

All of the notices are within the vocational-technical school system:

  • 3 staff members from A.I. Prince Technical High School
  • 3 Staff members from Eli Whitney Technical High School
  • 2 staff members from Platt Technical High School
  • 3 staff members from Vinal Technical High School
  • 2 staff members from Windham Technical High School

According to the state Office of Policy and Management, these notices come as a result of changes at the federal level. Officials say adult students in secondary schools will no longer have access to student financial aid and will no longer be able to pay tuition next academic year.

Consequently, once the current group of students complete their coursework, the following programs are terminated as of June 13, 2016; Medical Assistant at Platt Technical High School, Dental Assistant at Prince and Windham Technical High Schools, Certified Nursing Assistant at Whitney Technical High School, and Surgical Technologist at Prince and Whitney Technical High Schools.

  • DDS: 113
  • DECD: 4
  • DMHAS: 76
  • DOC: 187
  • DSS: 78
  • MIL: 1
  • OCME: 1
  • OGA: 4
  • SDE: 13
  • UCHC: 89
  • State Judicial Branch 300
  • TOTAL: 993
