Coventry police investigating fatal Boston Turnpike crash

COVENTRY, Conn. (WTNH) — A driver was killed on the Boston Turnpike in Coventry late Tuesday night after striking the rear of a tractor trailer.

Coventry police were dispatched to the intersection of the Boston Turnpike (Route 44) and Main Street (Route 31 South) around 11:15 p.m. on Tuesday night, after receiving reports of an accident.

On arrival, officers discovered that a Chevy S-10 pickup truck had driven into the back of a tractor trailer. It was revealed on further investigation that the fuel-bearing tractor trailer was coming to a halt in the eastbound lanes of the Turnpike, preparing to make a turn in order to make a delivery. The pickup truck collided with the East Haven-based, Ginnetti Petroleum tractor trailer, at this point. The contents of the tractor trailer were, notably, unaffected.

Coventry police say the pickup truck driver, the lone occupant, was pronounced dead at the scene.

The Boston Turnpike was closed for several hours as an accident reconstruction team investigated. Police say the investigation is open, as the cause of the collision has not been determined. Anyone with any information is asked to call the Coventry Police Department at (203) 742-7331.
