MANCHESTER, Conn. (WTNH) — Police have arrested a man who was babysitting a five-month-old when the baby died on Sunday.

Manchester police say 23-year-old Joshua Maldonado of Hartford was babysitting a five-month-old in Manchester on Sunday when they received a report of a baby choking. Responding personnel administered CPR and transported the baby to Manchester Memorial Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

The autopsy determined the baby’s death was caused by blunt head trauma and the manner of death was determined to be a homicide.

Police say based on their investigation, they developed probable cause that the infant’s death was a criminal act. An arrest warrant was obtained for Maldonado. On Wednesday, he turned himself in to police. He is charged with first-degree manslaughter, first-degree assault, and risk of injury to a minor. He is held on a $350,000 bond and is due in court on Thursday.

Police say Maldonado is not related to the infant.
