NEW HAVEN, Conn. (WTNH) — Just like airfare, the cost of hotel rooms tends to fluctuate, which might make you think you could be getting a better deal than you are. There are a few strategies you can take to get that room at a cheaper rate. Your hotel room is not usually the highlight of your vacation, the events of the day are, but it may be one of your biggest expenses.
However Dana Zimmerman with the Omni Hotel in New Haven says there are some ways to trip costs all around you may not know about starting with bundling.
“Rather than just the guest room, you express that you need more than just the guest room and calling the hotel directly is always a great opportunity to converse and find out what might be able to be done for them,” she said.
Another tip: sign up for price alerts or if you need something quicker ask about any no-shows or room cancellations that may come at a smaller price tag.
Don’t be afraid to book blindly meaning you choose your location and price range while the site matches you with a hotel. You may end up in a great hotel at a much lower rate.
While the deals on third-party sites may seem cheap, you may do even better to call the hotel directly and ask them to match it; just being nice goes a long way.
“There’s certainly an opportunity for them to look at the inventory, look at whats recently released, the cancellations that have happened, and just politely asking what more might be out there,” Zimmerman said.
Don’t forget to ask about any loyalty programs while you’re there that may get your free WiFi during your stay. If you’re looking to book a room last-minute try downloading a few apps first before calling the hotel that are known to offer “tonight only” deals. Experts have recommended the “Priceline” app and the “last-minute travel deals” app.
