WATERBURY, Conn. (WTNH) – Three Waterbury schools were placed in a soft lockdown Thursday morning after reports of a bear sighting in the area.
Just after 9:10 a.m., police responded to Highland Avenue, near Kennedy High School, West Side Middle School, and Tinker Elementary, on reported bear sightings in the neighborhood. By 9:30 a.m., all three schools were placed in a soft lockdown, meaning that all outdoor activities were canceled, according to Superintendent of Schools, Dr. Kathleen M. Ouellette.
The students at Tinker Elementary are on a field trip, but faculty and staff were present in the building. Kennedy High School and West Side Middle School had restricted activities confined to indoors.
Ouellette told News 8 that all three schools were dismissed at their regular times. No injuries were reported. Police had not located the bear as of late Thursday afternoon.
