Pro MMA fighters demonstrate self-defense tips

NEW HAVEN, Conn. (WTNH) — Being able to defend yourself in a threatening situation is so important, and we’ve got your back with some self-defense tips from professional mixed martial artists.

Joining us Sunday on Good Morning Connecticut were Matt Bessette, a professional MMA fighter from Hartford, and Jeff Haddad, also a professional MMA fighter.

Bessette and Haddad demonstrate some common situations where self-defense would come into play. The two are life-long friends who have just opened up a brand new gym together in Bristol.

Bessette is a cancer survivor, who at three years-old was diagnosed with Leukemia and given only a 50 percent chance of survival. He’s fought through other obstacles as well, including asthma early on in life and weighing only 100 pounds at the age of 16.

Now, the 31 year-old Hartford native is one of the country’s top MMA fighters at 145 pounds. Bessette has won his last three fights and has a big following in the Northeast MMA community.

Bessette is set to return to the ring on national television this Friday, June 10. It will be broadcast on AXS TV from Lincoln, Rhode Island.
