NEW HAVEN, Conn. (WTNH) — The New Haven Police Department added extra patrols to certain locations within the LGBTQ community. They’re paying close attention to LGBTQ clubs to make sure everyone is safe.

Katelyn Owens with the Triangle Community Center said there is work to be done to make their community feel safe again.

“It definitely shakes you. It definitely reminds you. Especially when it’s targeted at a specific community,” said Owens.

Owens is part of the LGBTQ community. She says after the Orlando nightclub massacre the feeling of being safe in a gay bars and nightclubs is shattered for some.

“It definitely does shake your sense of security, but I am surrounded by people making sure safe spaces exist for LGBTQ people all around the state,” said Owens. “A lot of us especially the most vulnerable in our community often feel unsafe just in general on the streets or out in public.”

Conor Pfeifer with the Triangle Community Center said TCC is a safe space statewide for the LGBTQ community to go for support.

“It’s a space where people are supported, loved, and affirmed for who they are. We work everyday with people who might be gay, freshly coming out to their parents and they have no place to turn,” said Pfeifer.

Pfeifer said local police departments and city leaders are working with the community.

“I think a lot of people are realizing that we can’t take our safe spaces for granted,” said Pfeifer.

Owens said bars and nightclubs are meant to be safe spaces.

“That feeling of wow this community exists and I’m just like them and I don’t ever see that so that’s incredible so you dance and smile and have fun and that’s ashamed that was taken away for people in Orlando,” said Owens.
