Things You’ve Forgotten to Clean this Spring

NEW HAVEN, Conn. (WTNH) — Summer is almost here which means if you haven’t already broken out the grill you probably will pretty soon. It’s important to clean both the exterior and interior parts of your grill. That includes the grilling surface, any metal that may come in contact with rainwater and also check all the gas lines to make sure there are no leaks.

A discolored door can be an eyesore, but it’s also on it’s way to being moldy or rusted. Get some bleach, follow the instructions on the package, scrub that door down.  Make sure if you have a metal door that you dry off afterwards. This will help keep your door looking brand new and also help prevent it from rotting for rusting.

Often times one of the byproducts of living in New England in the winter is that the temperatures go below freezing and then come back up and then drop back down again. That can sometimes cause cracks in your foundation. Now many of them are minor and can be repaired relatively easily. It’s important to get those taken care of right away before a bigger problem happens. You can find products to fix this yourself at the local hardware store, but it’s best to contact a professional to have it done.

What if I told you the cleaning all of your outdoor furniture took you less than 5 minutes to do. Well it does…all you need is a washing machine. Check out the back of your cushions, many of them have zippers. Take those covers off and throw them in the washing machine to make them look brand new!

Last tip…clean your gutters. I know this probably seems like something that you would do during the fall but it’s also really important to clean out your gutters in the springtime. This is the time of the year where any stuck water is going to create mold and that’s going to cost you big dollars. Also don’t forget to make sure you have someone spotting if you go out onto the roof or out onto an extension ladder.

Here are a few more tips:

  • Clear up any brush from around the sides of your foundation. Dead leaves, sticks, and wood can cause mold and harbor ticks.
  • Make sure to clean the interior and exterior of your windows.
  • Do a garage sale to get rid of any unwanted items you have around your house.
  • Check out any fences you have around your property to make sure they’re still structurally sound and not rotted. It’s also important to make sure your deck is sound as well.
