CLINTON, Conn. (WTNH) — The Clinton teenager best know for weaponizing drones, has been arrested on child porn and attempted sex assault charges. Police say 19-year-old Austin Haughwout never broke the law by putting weapons on drones, but he is in handcuffs now, and it’s all because of what police found on his cellphone.

“There were images of children in obscene acts found on his phone,” said Sgt. Jeremiah Dunn, spokesman for the Clinton Police Department.

We first met Austin Haughwout two years ago, when a woman beat him up for taking pictures of people at Hammonasset beach with a drone.

Then he mounted a gun on a drone, fired it behind his parents’ Clinton home, put it on YouTube and the video went viral. Like any hit, there was a sequel. This time he roasted a turkey with a drone-mounted flamethrower.

Those videos led to an investigation by the FAA. Clinton police told News 8 that the video didn’t seem to break any laws. Those videos did get Haughwout kicked out of Central Connecticut State University. He is suing over that.

He also got stopped by police for a non-drone related event last July. When he came to the police station to answer the charge, he got into an altercation with police.

“There were some accusations that there were some excessive force, or Mr. Haughwout claimed he was assaulted versus the officers that were assaulted,” Sgt. Dunn explained. “As a result, Mr Haughwout was found to be in possession of a cellphone at the time of his arrest that was recording a the time.”

So police took Haughwout’s cellphone as evidence. It took all winter and spring to get a warrant and go through his phone, but when they did they found evidence that led to all new charges.

“Images of children in an obscene performance were found on his phone as well as some conversation that Mr. Haughwout allegedly inititiated with some juvenile children, where he allegedly asked to meet at a location and specified a sexual act,” said Sgt. Dunn.

Police say he never actually met up with that juvenile, but just writing that was enough for police to get an arrest warrant for Haughwout charging him with enticing a minor with a computer, fourth-degree attempt at sexual assault, risk of injury/impairing the morals of children, and possessing child pornography.

Police just got the arrest warrant on all those charges yesterday. Haughwout happened to be in Middletown court on other charges yesterday, so Clinton Police arrested him at the courthouse, booked him in Clinton, now he is back in Middletown court to be arraigned.
