Driver on drugs or alcohol crashes into sub base gate

LEDYARD, Conn. (WTNH)  –  A driver on either drugs and /or alcohol sped away from police early this morning and crashed into the north sub base in Ledyard damaging the fence.

Ledyard Police say an officer investigating an unrelated incident note an vehicle being driven erratically at which time the vehicle drove off at a high rate of speed on Cove Road.   The officer attempted to follow the vehicle when it turned onto Military Highway crashing into the fence.

The driver, 32 year old Orlando Mateo of New London, was already wanted for failure to appear.  He is now facing addition charges of driving under the influence of drugs and/or alcohol, misuse of plates, operating a motor vehicle under suspension, operating a motor vehicle without insurance, traveling to fast for conditions, operating an unregistered motor vehicle and failure to obey traffic signa.
