Shooting, assault closes a New Haven street and a McDonald’s

NEW HAVEN, Conn. (WTNH)– Police are investigating a shooting and an assault that both happened overnight in the Fair Haven section of New Haven.

The shooting happened on Poplar street in the area of Grand Avenue around 1:40 a.m. 21-year-old Jose Vasquez and 20-year-old Noel Figueroa told police they were confronted by two black men, one of whom pistol whipped Figueroa leading to a struggle. Two shots were fired, one striking Vasquez in his bicep.

Vasquez and Figueroa then ran to a McDonald’s for safety. Rescue crews transported the victims to Yale-New Haven Hospital with non-threatening injuries.


The victims told police their attackers took off toward Clay Street. Officers spotted a man matching the description of one of the suspects attempting to hide at the rear of 425 Poplar Street. Police tell News 8 they interviewed the 23-year-old convicted felon, but have not yet charged him with any crime.

Police continue to investigate.
