GUILFORD, Conn. (WTNH) — As the temperature goes up, so does the energy bill, but there are some ways to be comfortable without overspending.
The air conditioners are in and likely in full swing now. Before you overpay for cooling, home improvement expert and TV show host Danny Lipford showed us easy ways to stretch your dollar.
Number one: make sure you change out the air conditioning filter, just don’t pick the cheapest one.
“If you’re in the grocery store and you see those cheap filters for two or three dollars, keep walking, don’t use any of that, it’s almost worthless. Use an electrostatic filter, it’s only going to cost you $12-$15 but it will last up to 3 months in your home versus having to change one every month,” Lipford said.
Next, get a programmable thermostat so your heating and cooling adjusts while you’re away at work. Possibly, one of the best home investments you can make is attic insulation.
“If you have just enough money and time to do just two rooms or the attic space over two rooms, you’re still taking giant steps to make your home more energy efficient,” Lipford said.
Weatherstripping your windows and doors or filling in any cracks around the house will save you big on heating and cooling year-round.
Save the date – Lipford will feature a Guilford family on his program in August. The episode shot in Guilford will broadcast on August 6th on News 8. You can watch Today’s Homeowner every Saturday on News 8.
