Don’t mess with the piping plover

(WTNH)–Stay clear of beach birds. That’s the message from the Department of Energy and Environmental Protection.

The piping plover is a threatened and endangered bird that lives along the Connecticut shoreline. DEEP is warning residents of the area and visitors to stay out of roped areas, and to keep dogs on a leash at a safe distance from these birds.

The piping plover is federally protected, so anyone who messes with them could be looking at a fine in the thousands of dollars, or even a year in jail.
