WATERBURY, Conn. (WTNH)– A Waterbury apartment turned into a crime scene Sunday after police discovered the body of a woman inside of a closet.
Police have charged Adam Plaeger with the murder his girlfriend, Melanie Heuberger, who was found stuffed in the bedroom closet of their apartment on 36 Plaza Avenue. Neighbors said they’re in shock.
“It’s creepy knowing that you live across the street from a murderer,” said Elba Ortiz.
Police said Plaeger choked his 40-year-old girlfriend to death. Days before Heuberger’s body was found, the couple reportedly had a domestic dispute, according to investigators. Heuberger’s friend says the couple had planned on getting married.
“He just loved her so much,” said Katherine Carr. “I think he just snapped.”
Carr added that she believes the couple had their problems, but were very much in love.
“He was really dedicated. He had– as you can see the pictures of him– he has a tattoo on his neck of her name, but he also has one on his arm, I believe. Basically he idolized her. She was like his queen. Which is why this is so shocking,” Carr said.
Plaeger is being held on a $1 million bond. Waterbury police continue to investigate.
