New London expecting large crowd for fireworks

NEW LONDON, Conn. (AP) — New London officials say they expect about 300,000 visitors this weekend for the city’s 39th annual Sailfest celebration and fireworks show.

Organizers are billing Saturday night’s fireworks as the fourth-largest display on the East Coast.

The city says crowds along the waterfront are expected to be larger than usual after budget concerns forced cities such as Hartford and Norwich to cancel their annual Independence Day displays this year.

The Sailfest fireworks are paid for by the Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation and Foxwoods Resort Casino.

Sailfest will also feature its usual vendors, music and food, and a 5K road race.

Visitors, for a price, can also take a ride on the Mystic Whaler, the lone tall ship participating in this year’s festival.
