NEW LONDON, Conn. (WTNH) – Only one legislator from the Connecticut House of Representatives attended a public hearing on the proposed affiliation between Yale New Haven Health System and Lawrence and Memorial Healthcare.
Republican Representative Kathleen McCarty, who represents Waterford and Montville, spoke out in favor of the plan. She said “I believe that the state has put our local health care system into this financial hardship; state policies that have imposed taxes, withheld federal funds, and cut Medicaid reimbursement are largely responsible for Lawrence & Memorial’s financial distress. The state now has a responsibility to help provide a solution. The proposed affiliation – not a merger – makes great sense from a clinical, financial, and strategic perspective for the good of both healthcare systems, their employee’s and patients.
A second public hearing is plan for hospital officials and the public.
