Tips for keeping your grass green despite no rain, extreme heat

HAMDEN, Conn. (WTNH)– The effects from the extreme heat and lack of rain is easily visible in many of our yards. Grass once green is now brown.

Everyone wants their lawns to look nice and green. But Mother Nature is not making that very easy. Depending on where you live, the rain deficit since June 1st ranges from 3 to 8 inches. That’s pretty significant.

Watering is one of the best things you can do for your lawn right now. If you are able to water, it’s recommended doing so in the early morning between 6 a.m. and 10 a.m. Or in the evening between 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. This way the water can actually make it to the roots.

Watering at night can cause disease on your lawn. Anthony Baviello, a golf course superintendent at Laurel View Country Club in Hamden, says watering during the day when the sun is the hottest can actually do more harm than good.

“You’re not watering it because you don’t want that water to sit. The water sits on the grass leaf and what happens is it magnifies. As it magnifies it burns through the grass plant. So you need to be very careful on how you’re doing it,” said Baviello.

The way you cut your grass can also affect its health. Try to leave the grass a little longer if possible. That will help protect the roots from the sun’s rays. Only mow after we’ve had rain or after you’ve watered your lawn. When you cut your grass, the blades lose whatever moisture they do have, which will turn your lawn brown.

And when it comes to watering, just be mindful of whatever water restrictions your city or town has in place.
