Cops at Waterbury school, for cold treats

WATERBURY, Conn. (WTNH) — There was a heavy police presence at the Duggan School in Waterbury Thursday. But they arrived to applause and cheers, after being invited there by summer school students.

“I told them thank you for protecting my family and friends,” said Imani Henry, a rising fourth grader at the school.

On the last day of their summer school program, students thought it would be a good to personally say thank you for all that police do in their city.

“The kids got really excited,” said Melissa DiGiovanni, principal of the summer program at Duggan. “(They) started making cards and writing letters. Turned out to be a big, great event.”

Kids handed out cold treats and drinks, high fives and hugs, to Waterbury cops. Plenty of officers made the trip over, welcomed with shouts from students and teachers.

“Feels really good for me to know that officers working here in Waterbury are recognized and appreciated by members of the community,” said Waterbury Deputy Police Chief Fred Spagnolo.

Fourth-grader Zymiah Sweat wrote a two page letter and read it aloud; “Never give it up. Never stop helping us because we need you. Everybody needs you.”

“No matter how small kids are, they can make a big difference and really touch some of these officers and say thank you for everything they’ve done,” DiGiovanni said.

“You can save our community,” Sweat’s letter read. “Thank you for everything.”
