HARTFORD, Conn (WTNH) — A Waterbury man who pleaded guilty for filing hundreds of false tax returns has been sentenced to federal prison.
A U.S. District Judge in Hartford has sentenced 42-year-old Marcus Fox to a 12 month prison sentence, followed by one year of supervised release for preparing and filing false tax returns.
Fox originally pleaded guilty to two counts of aiding and assisting the filing of a false tax return back in March of 2016.
Between the years of 2009 and 2012, Fox prepared and filed more than 900 tax returns with the I.R.S. The false information Fox put in a number of these returns caused clients to receive a bigger tax refund than they were entitled.
He also gave himself a bigger payout without the knowledge of his clients. Fox would prepare a second tax return, which he would not file, but provide to his client to hide the ongoing plan.
The scheme cost the federal government over $2.2 million.
