Cruisin’ Connecticut – Taking a plunge at the Brownstone Exploration + Discovery Park

PORTLAND, Conn. (WTNH) – Today we’re Cruisin’ Connecticut to the Portland, to check out the Brownstone Exploration & Discover Park!

Many of the brownstone buildings you see today in Boston and New York were built from the stone in the Portland Quarry, right here in Connecticut.

In 1939, the quarry was flooded and left vacant for decades. That until the Hayes brothers came along and transformed the quarry into a adventure sports park.

The park, nestled just across the Arrigoni Bridge features zip lines, cliff jumping, paddle boarding, snorkeling, and more. Brownstone also has a section just for kids 12 and under.

One mom says:

Well, it’s great because I have two kids around 9 and 7 and I don’t have to worry about bigger kids jumping on them or climbing on them.

I took a shot at being launched off “the blob” and racing down the wakeboarding zip line. Saying it was a thrill wouldn’t do it justice.
Families can bring their own food for picnics and the park provides free parking.
