Back-to-school bus safety tips

EAST HARTFORD, Conn. (WTNH) –The East Hartford Police Department issued some back-to-school bus safety tips.

Police want to remind drivers to stop as they approach a bus with lights that are flashing red. Failure to stop would be disobeying the law and could result in fines for motorists starting at $465 for the first offense.

“As school starts up in the next couple of weeks, it is important for parents and guardians to remind their children about safety procedures around bus stops,” Mayor Marcia A. Leclerc said. “Most accidents involving school buses take place while children are entering or exiting the school bus each day, so please take extra care when traveling behind or near a bus.”

Police Chief Scott Sansom also had some safety tips to offer children:

  • Make sure there is a safe place to wait for the bus.
  • Enter and exit the bus away from traffic.
  • Stay away from the bus until it comes to a complete stop and the driver says it’s ok to enter.
  • When exiting a bus, walk ahead of it before crossing in front so the driver can see you.
  • Use the hand rails to enter and exit the bus.
  • Be extra cautious and look both ways as you cross the street.

Officers will be stepping up enforcement in school zones and bus routes to ensure that drivers are obeying traffic laws so children stay safe.

Police said if children have any questions in regards to safety to bring their concerns to parents, police or school officials.
