NEW HAVEN, Conn. (WTNH/ABC News) — We all know how busy and expensive life gets when the kids are back to school! Nobody knows better where the short-cuts are than parents!

From getting the kids out of bed to packing a lunch they’ll actually eat, having a student at home is not easy which is why we asked some parents to let us in on some of their tricks.

If your kids don’t like to wake up early, try letting the family pet wake them up or have a playlist ready to go so they can wake up to their favorite song. If your kids are bored with cold lunches, we talked to a mom who found out a way to send them with a hot lunch without spending money at school!

“One of the things I do is I fill a thermos with hot water and I let it sit for about 15 minutes. I bake chicken nuggets and I put the chicken nuggets in the thermos and even 3 or 4 hours later when my son is ready to have lunch, they are still warm,” said lifestyle expert and blogger Sarah O’Brien.

And we all know their school supplies can get expensive. One financial adviser by day, dad by night says his kids have fun shopping in his desk. Which also saves him money.

“They may not have the attractive cartoon character or celebrity that’s on the cover but it’ll still serve a purpose,” Matthew Carbray said.

Homework typically only adds stress to kids lives so putting a time-limit on it for the little ones may make them work harder when they know there’s an end! For that one find out from their teacher what a reasonable amount of time is to expect them to finish their work.
