Bridgeport firefighters investigating Seaside Park mulch fire

BRIDGEPORT, Conn. (WTNH) — Bridgeport fire officials are investigating what may have caused a mulch fire in Seaside Park early Monday morning.

Bridgeport firefighters were dispatched to the west beach of Seaside Park around 1:00 a.m., after an officer in the area saw the fire. For about three hours, crews worked to control the burning pile of mulch.

According to Bridgeport firefighters, most fire crews had cleared the scene by around 4:00 a.m., but one company stayed behind as a precaution, monitoring for any hot spots that might reignite the pile. The Fire Marshal is conducting the investigation into the cause.

Locals have reported seeing flames from afar, and the smell of the fire wafted all the way to I-95, nearly a mile away. The Department of Energy and Environmental Protection was not called, and there were no out-of-town companies that provided mutual aid.
