Ask the Doctor: Is carrying a heavy backpack harmful to students?

(WTNH) – Lots of children are heading back to school this week, which means lots of books, homework and a heavy backpack. Some parents worry that strain on a kid’s back could cause pain or damage.

Double board certified in reconstructive and plastic surgery, Dr. Beth Collins, joined News 8 to talk about the subject.

Some of the questions we asked:

-Is it dangerous for kids to be carrying around this excess weight all day long?

-Why are kids having pain?

-What should I do as a parent?

Check out the video above for Dr. Beth’s answers, and catch News 8 at 5 p.m. every Wednesday for our “Ask the Doctor” segments.
