Go green & save green by going car-free in New Haven

NEW HAVEN, Conn. (WTNH) — The city of New Haven hopes you’ll drop the keys and ditch the car and be more like Kathy Fay.

“It just feels so great. I end up tapping into that inner child. Riding the bike, feeling free. It’s made me feel so much younger,” said New Haven Housing Services Kathy Far.

Go New Haven Go is in it’s third year. So far, 550 people signed up for a Car-Free September. You can still sign up as a an individual or employer. Then, you log your rides.

Mayor Toni Harp says she’s thinking outside the car.

“I have been toying with the idea of biking on Fridays. So, you might just see me flying down Edgewoood Avenue,” said Mayor Harp.

Plus, you can save green and go green. It comes with tax incentives and discounts at local stores and it’s good for the environment.

Fay said, “We have a high asthma rate in New Haven and so the more we can cut down on emissions in new Haven the healthier it is for everyone who lives here.”

Last year, organizers estimate they reduced carbon dioxide emissions by over 70 tons. They’re hoping the pedal power, bus riding, and walking will help them make bigger strides this year.
