HARTFORD, Conn. (WTNH) — For the first time ever, the state Capitol Building in Hartford will raise the national flag of Mexico on Friday, September 16 to celebrate Mexico’s Independence.
The honor will recognize the citizens and resident of Mexican ancestry living in Connecticut, and for their contributions to the economy and to the cultural diversity of Connecticut and the region.
The Mexican flag will be raised at noon on Friday. The public is invited to attend the ceremony and a reception following the flag raising. Members of the Mexican community and invited public officials will offer some remarks, followed by a musical performance by Mariachi México Antiguo.
The flag-raising idea comes from Mexican-born artist Carlos Hernández Chávez, a Hartford resident since 1967.
