Home preparations for power outages

EAST HAVEN, Conn. (WTNH)– Goody’s Hardware in East Haven is abuzz Friday, as parts of the Connecticut shoreline come under a tropical storm watch.

“Inquiries about the generators, batteries, flashlights, everything already,” said David Katz.

Katz runs the place and said people are looking to make sure they can still live a somewhat normal life in the event of power outages. Of course a generator will help with that. The big ones are sometimes enough to power several houses at once, as one employee explained to Katz previously.

“Had three neighbors hooked up to it,” Katz said. “They all ran their fridge at the same time. Cords all over the neighborhood. Worked out well, saved neighbor’s food.”

Just this week, United Illuminating met with emergency planners from all 17 towns it serves.

“To be able to work through the plan so that we’ve got a good process and plan in place when storms come,” said Anthony Marone, UI vice president. “There’s a lot that’s happened in the last five years that we’ve been working through.”

Eversource sent News 8 a brief statement regarding their storm preparations that reads; “We continue watching the forecast and will be ready, if needed.”

If you end up needing to use that generator, remember safety first. Make sure to leave it outside and away from any siding on your home. Also be ready to tie down or bring inside anything outside that can catch wind and fly off, to avoid accidental damage.

“Secure grills. Take everything off the deck and put close to the house so it’s not going get wind blowing through it,” Katz said. “The light stuff, bring inside as much as you can.”

If using a generator, do not overload it. Read instructions and stay a little below the recommended usage for safety. Once again, keep it outside and away from your home.
