HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) — Advocacy groups are looking to spend money on Connecticut’s upcoming state legislative races, some for the first time.

This latest batch of independent expenditures involving General Assembly races comes two years after outside groups spent more than $16 million on Connecticut’s governor’s race.

For the first time, the Connecticut Business and Industry Association has budgeted $400,000 for independent spending it plans to make in up to 15 General Assembly races.

Another group, Democrats for Education Reform, is making independent expenditures for the first time in the state’s legislative races.

With a large number of open legislative seats, money spent by these and other groups could have an impact on this year’s election. The expenditures often involve spending money on mailers and social media, but without any coordination with the candidate.
