DMV announces new federal requirements for Commercial Drivers

WETHERSFIELD, Conn. (WTNH) – The Connecticut Department of Motor Vehicles announced Tuesday that starting December 6th, to comply with a federal mandate, people applying for commercial licenses will have to provide additional documents to prove their identity. The same rules will apply to people who want to transfer their Commercial Drivers Licence (CDL) to Connecticut.

CDL holders will see the change in their renewal notices, which are mailed two months in advance. The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) mandates states to require CDL drivers and applicants to show proof of U.S. citizenship, lawful permanent residence or temporary legal presence, along with proof of Connecticut residency. In many cases, CDL holders can present their birth certificate or passport, their Social Security card, and verify their address with postmarked mail or billing statements to meet the requirements.

Additionally, non-U.S. citizens will also need to prove their legal status in the country.

“DMV is announcing this change to give CDL holders time to gather their identity documents, such as a birth certificate or passport,” DMV Commissioner Michael Bzdyra said. “We are advising current CDL holders to wait for their renewal notice, read it carefully, and be prepared to present identity documents, if they have not already done so, to avoid delays when it’s time to renew their licenses.”
