NEW HAVEN, Conn. (WTNH) — A lot of people in New Haven are being encouraged to leave the car keys behind and make their way around the city on two wheels.

In celebration, bikers from across New Haven gathered Friday morning in Pitkin Plaza downtown for the New Haven Bike to Work Breakfast. It’s all about promoting a healthy form of transportation.

Caroline Smith from Elm City Cycling explained their goals to spread bike to work breakfasts into other neighborhoods in the city.

I think one of the goals is to spread the bike to work breakfast into other neighborhoods one of the kind of central goals of elm city cycling is to make sure we represent all neighbrohoods of New Haven not only Pitkin Plaza but the Hill, Goffe Street park and other places that are big thoroughfares for cyclists’

Friday’s breakfast is all a part of the city’s Car Free Challenge. Supporters say there are lot of reasons to live the idea of commuting on a bike.

“There’s an environmental reason, reducing greenhouse gas emmissions, improving air quality, and reducing air pollution,” said Krysia Solheim from the City Transportation Department.

Elm City Cycling have several priorities to make New Haven more bike-friendly, including making it more affordable.

“For a lot of people, it’s actually being able to purchase a bike,” said Liam Brennan, a former board member at Elm City Cycling. “We’re urging our city partners to help community groups to help produce a bike financing plan and help more people to be able to get around.”
