NORFOLK, Va. (WTNH) — A member of the Coast Guard Academy’s Class of 2016 will serve one year in prison after he was found guilty of a sexual assault charge.

Cadet Michael Shermot was sentenced Friday, and has been dismissed from the service by a military judge.

Shermot was found guilty on Thursday from an incident in Westchester, Pa., that occurred sometime between September 4th and 5th of 2015.

The Shillington, Pa. native was charged in December of 2015 for violating Article 120 of the Uniform Code of Military Justice. He was suspended from the Corps of Cadets for ‘serious misconduct’ the following day, according to a Coast Guard spokesperson.
