Ways to prevent low back pain


NEW HAVEN Conn. (WTNH) — If you have a desk job or you are busy pick up your kids. You may suffer from lower back pain. Dr. David Foreman stopped by our station with some ways on how to prevent and how to soothe back pain.

September is National Pain Awareness Month and Dr. David Foreman explains the top three issues Americans go see their  doctor. Low-back pain and how a DIY approach to alleviating the pain may  be more effective than the billions of dollars Americans are spending on back pain gadgets and OTC painkiller.

A new study published in JAMA Internal Medicine concluded that gadgets such as back belts and shoe insoles were not effective in preventing back pain, however researchers found exercise reduced the risk of repeated low-back pain in up to 40 percent of participants in the year following an episode.

Currently, 80 percent of adults experience low-back pain at some point in their lifetimes but this new study found that doctors are not prescribing exercise as much as they should to help solve the problem. In fact, experts say there may be other DIY solutions for sufferers who are squandering money on fancy gadgets and OTC painkillers like acetaminophen (Tylenol) that in a recent study proved to be no more effective than taking a placebo pill for pain.
