MILFORD, Conn. (WTNH) — Milford fire officials say reports of a man overboard prompted a search and rescue effort, but was called off.

Around 5:45 p.m., Milford dispatch center received a call of a boater in distress in Long Island Sound near an area known as Burwell Beach.

Milford Fire Rescue Units responded where they found a 70-year-old man on a small boat. The man told them that his elderly father had fallen overboard and disappeared underwater. Additional dive teams and the Coast Guard were called in to help. They searched the area and found nothing.

The man was evaluated on scene and taken to an area hospital as a precaution.

Milford police, along with Connecticut State Police, were able to contact the man’s family, who told them that his elderly father had been dead for many years and was not on the boat.

The search was suspended by all agencies.
