NEW HAVEN, Conn. (WTNH) — It is the last day of summer which means many of you will soon be flying to warmer places. Airfare is not cheap and it only gets more expensive, the more room you want on the plane.

We are helping you stretch your dollar with tips to score a better seat without spending anymore.  It’s not a guarantee! But there are a few tricks you can try to get a roomier spot without actually paying for an upgrade.

Consumer Reports revealed 5 tips that can help you. First, choose your airline carefully. At last check JetBlue has the highest ratings when it comes to comfort and leg room.

If your flight will cost the same on most airlines, check SeatGuru before you book to see how big the seats are and how much legroom there is and where seats are located on the different flights.

They suggest booking the first or last flight of the day.  Those tend to be less crowded and give you the option to pick a better seat.

Also, use the perks you’ve earned. Many loyalty  airline programs give you complimentary access to roomier seats and faster check-in.

Lastly, be patient! If you’re booking and see the expensive seats with more legroom is still available. Don’t spend the extra money. You’ll likely be assigned a seat at the airport, but if all the “cheaper” seats are taken, you could be bumped to the expensive seats with more space at no extra cost.

Also, if you’re flying with someone, you should book the window seat and the aisle seat. If the flight isn’t full, the chances of the middle seat booking up is slim. The extra seat could give you both more legroom.
