EAST HAVEN, Conn. (WTNH) — East Haven Police tell News 8 that they have made a second arrest in the September 14th crash that took the life of 27-year-old Gaitana Girgenti.

28-year-old Sara Montano was arrested Thursday on a third degree hindering prosecution charge.

Police say Montano was questioned about the whereabouts of Johnassis Melendez during the investigation into the accident. Melendez was allegedly behind the wheel of the car when it crashed on Frontage Road. According to police, Melendez fled when officers arrived on the scene.

Montano originally told investigators she did not know Melendez’s location, according to police. A subsequent investigation determined that Montano not only knew where Melendez was, but she allegedly admitted to police that she was the one who transported him to northern Connecticut so he could avoid prosecution.

Melendez has since turned himself into police custody and live streamed his capture in a Facebook Live video. According to court documents, Melendez had a suspended license, and should not have been behind the wheel at all.
