(WTNH)– Schools in at least three Connecticut towns are on alert right now, all because of online threats involving clowns.

This follows weeks of hoaxes and empty threats all across the country– with clowns making threats to schools in Ohio and Alabama and a group of people dressed as clowns trying to lure kids into the woods in South Carolina.

In Connecticut, we have seen vague threats made on Instagram against school in New Haven, North Haven and Naugatuck. Schools have to take the threats seriously, even if they involve…clowns.

“I’m hearing that they’re coming to school at dark and trying to scare us and we should run away because they’re really dangerous,” said Hill Regional Career High School senior Taijzeeaunna Kelly Anderson on her way to school this morning.

“I’m hearing about that they’re going to invade the school and basically attack students,” said Danielle Asoh, a Career High Freshman.

The threats came on the social media site Instagram. Someone going by the handle “New Haven Clown” wrote “if you go to career watch out”. Lots of other people comment, and the clown singles out one and writes “you just became our next target”…and that wasn’t all.

“They were supposed to this school, then Hillhouse, then Cross and then all that,” explained Career High sophomore Jaquan Ford.

Another message read: “Then Hillhouse, Cross, Eli Whitney, Co-Op, Sound… u really think it’s fake, wait and see.”

A woman driving by Career High School this morning said she had contacted the school principal and asked if there would be stepped up police patrols on the school grounds today. When the principal said there wouldn’t be, the mother decided to keep her daughter home from school.

On Monday, New Haven Public Schools sent out its own message, which read in part: “At this time there is no indication this incident poses any real or substantial threat to New Haven Public Schools or Students. We do however take these incidents very seriously; In light of this incident, we will continue to monitor the situation throughout the week.”

The Borough of Naugatuck did increase police presence in all its schools today, after a social media post from a Jackson The Clown warned people in Naugatuck “Be carful (sic) lock your doors. Which school wanna go first?” Naugatuck police said they do not believe the threat to be credible, but police are “thoroughly investigating these posts and any persons connected to them.”

The creepy stories began two months ago in North Carolina, when someone said there was a clown luring kids into the woods. Since then, we have seen threats and stories from at least 20 states. Police have arrested people for making the threats, but what we have not seen are actual clowns.

New Haven is also telling students they are not allowed to wear clown costumes this Halloween season There were also rumors of clown threats and sightings on the campuses of both UConn and Quinnipiac University, but no evidence that any of it is real.

“I’m not worried. I know it’s just a little prank, so I’m not stressing about it,” said Career High Junior Donald Walker.

Just the possibility of clowns is enough to give people the creeps because so many people seem to suffer from “coulrophobia,” the fear of clowns.
