EAST HAVEN, Conn. (WTNH)– Pam Gandossy believes Silver Sands Road in East Haven is a death trap, with cars going at a high rate of speed both day and night.
Gandossy said cars have taken out her mailbox more than once.
“You can hear how fast the traffic comes behind me we’ve had about 6 or 8 cars land on our front lawn,” she said. “To have a young son who can’t even go out and get the mail because I’m afraid he’s going to get hit by a car is a sad situation.”
“My son is not allowed to ride his bike in the front yard, he’s not allowed to get the mail from our front yard,” Gandossy said.
“I’m really worried about cars hitting me,” Mason Gandossy said.
He is not the only child on the block worried.
“I just watch where I’m going and make sure that the people drive by do slow down because people could get hurt,” said Courtney Pellegrino.
Some East Haven residents call Silver Sands Road Silver Sands Speedway, because the drivers fly by.
News 8 clocked drivers going over the 25 mile per hour speed limit. Mason Gandossy said, “It’s really scary because If I see a car coming I’m worried for myself and my friends.”
Pam now drives her son to school because she says it’s too dangerous for him to stand at the bus stop.
“Somebody needs to take responsibility for the road,” she said. “Either the state highway department needs to not plow our highway and give us great service in the winter or the town of east haven needs to put speed bumps on our road before somebody dies.”
Silver Sands is a state road. News 8 contacted state police as well as the East Haven police department, but did not hear back. The mayor’s office told News 8 that they are looking into the matter.
