HAMDEN, Conn. (WTNH) – Today we’re Cruisin’ Connecticut to Hamden, home of “The Soup Girl!” Owner, Jessica Hazan had an affinity for soup at a young age:
My mother always let us experiment in the kitchen. One of my first words was soup. She said whenever I would see her white stock pot come down, I would point at it and say “oup, oup!”
Looking for a healthy alternative to take-out food, Hazan decide to pour her passion for fresh, local ingredients into her business:
We make four hot soups every day. We always have one vegan, one vegetarian, usually a meat or seafood, and a chicken. And then we have a refrigerated case with stuff to take home and heat up, and we rotate through about 150 different soups.
Hazan gave us the inside scoop on her butternut bourbon soup, made with squash from Rose’s Farm in Glastonbury. The flavor was rich and sweet, made with healthy ingredients.
