HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) — A new state report says schools need to have a clearer and more consistent understanding of the state’s math standards at each grade level.
The report from state Education Commissioner Dianna Wentzell’s council on mathematics, released Thursday, also calls for better support and training to make sure those standards are embraced in all classrooms, schools and districts.
In August, results of Connecticut’s first statewide SAT exam highlighted the same challenges students had in math that appeared in last year’s results from a different standardized test. Just over 39 percent of 11th graders who took the SAT met or exceeded the achievement standard for math.
Wentzell created her council last year to explore innovations in math instruction. The recommendations also include more mathematics coursework for student teachers.
