Milford police identify body found in burning car

MILFORD, Conn. (WTNH) — Milford police have revealed the identity of a body that was found inside a burning car last Friday night.

Officers revealed the victim as 72-year-old Richard Weir. According to police, Weir’s body was discovered just after 10:30 p.m. Friday night in the area of 1 Milford Point Road, near the Connecticut Audubon Society building.

When firefighters arrived on the scene, they found the car fully engulfed in flames. After extinguishing the blaze, firefighters discovered the remains of Weir’s body inside the vehicle.

Milford Fire and Police Departments are continuing their investigation. Milford officials are working with the Connecticut State Police Fire & Explosion Investigation Unit, as well as the State Medical Examiner to determine what may have the caused the fire.

The Connecticut Post reports that Weir had recently been released from prison, after serving most of a three-year sentence for embezzling more than $230,000 from both the Milford Rotary Club and the Milford Special Olympics. Weir had served as the treasurer for both of those organizations during an 18-year period.
