NEW HAVEN, Conn. (WTNH) — Two missing boaters were found and an arrest was made after a search and rescue on Long Island Sound Tuesday morning.

Encon police say two men were out on the water when they noticed that there was a problem with their boat. They called a friend who then alerted police, and a search began for the two boaters around 5 a.m.

Coast Guard sectors and local police agencies from New Haven to New London coordinated to locate and bring ashore the disabled boat and the boaters. Coast Guard Sector Long Island Sound says they received the call from their command center just before 6 a.m., joining what was already a roughly 2-hour long search involving Coast Guard Unit New London, and Old Saybrook, Clinton, Westbrook, and Madison first responders.

“There were at least three boats out there looking and each boat is manned with at least two or three people on board,” said Sergeant Todd Chemacki with the Department of Energy and Environmental Protection EnCon Police.

At one point, these agencies lost contact with the boaters, and New Haven Coast Guard dispatchers say that the boater had previously reported that his cell phone was only about 15% charged.

The men were found safe three miles off the coast of Madison and brought to the Clinton Marina around 6:30 a.m.

One of the boaters is however in police custody because he had a warrant out for his arrest, that was unrelated to the boating incident.
