BERLIN, Conn. (WTNH)  –  Eversource has announced it is installing “smart switches” on its system throughout Connecticut which will make the electric grid smarter which will mean power will be restored quicker following outages.

According to Eversource, with the 200 smart switches and using computer-assisted technology at Eversource’s operations center, power can be restored with sending out crews to inspect and make repairs.  Eversource says this will decrease outages by 30 to 50 percent.

50 smart switches have already been installed and 60 more are being installed this year and another 90 in 2017.   The switches are being placed in areas that have had more frequent outages in recent years.

The switches identify the location of an outage, isolate the problem and then reroute power to customers which will lead to outages not lasting as long and impacting fewer customers.

The cost of the switches is $13 million dollars.
