NEW LONDON, Conn. (WTNH) — A Wauregan man locked in Ocean Beach Park in New London after dark drove through a fence because he was scared, police say.

According to authorities, 32-year-old Hector Santiago was leaving the park after fishing Thursday night when he noticed he was locked in. Police say Santiago told them he was scared, so he drove through the fence to get out. Park employees estimate it will cost $2,000 or more to fix the damage.

The North Walnut Street man is charged with driving under the influence, reckless driving, evading responsibility, and first-degree criminal mischief. He was released on bond and is due in court on October 27.
