SHELTON, CONN. (WTNH) — An Ansonia man is facing charges after authorities say he attacked and robbed two teenagers in Shelton.
At around 8 p.m. on Wednesday, 26 year-old Corey Welch approached two teens, 16 and 19 years-old, and asked if they hung around with a certain person, police said.
According to officials, Welch then pushed the 19 year-old to the ground, pulled out a machete and put it to his throat. Welch continued to yell, then choked and hit the victim.
Authorities say Welch then took the 16 year-old’s cell phone and other items and threw them into the river. The teens were let go and were able to leave.
After an investigation, police identified Welch as the suspect and obtained a warrant. Police arrested Welch, who was already in custody at Derby court on Wednesday.
Welch is charged with 1st degree robbery, 1st degree assault, carrying a dangerous weapon, and 5th degree larceny. He is being held on $150,000 bond.
