Golden Corral looking to hire 200 for Milford Restaurant

Unemployment, jobs

MILFORD, Conn. (WTNH) — Golden Corral Buffet and Grill is looking to hire 200 people for its new location in Milford at 74 Turnpike Square. It will be in the old HomeTown Buffet location.

More than 600 people applied to work for the new Golden Corral, including Melissa Rodriguez. She just came back to Connecticut after searching for jobs in Texas. She’s hoping to land a full-time job.

“I love Golden Corral,” said Marissa Rodriguez of Stratford, “Just got to stay positive. Positive mindset. Positive outcome.”

Lee Owen of Bridgeport is also applying for a job as a manager. He’s worked in food services for his whole career.

“This is a good opportunity to come out here and see if you can make something happen,” said Owen.

Because of the quick time frame, Golden Corral was conducting interviews on the spot.

“We expect to be open 60 to 90 days from now,” said Rick Rosier, a Franchisee Manager, “So we are beginning the interviewing process.”

Add Golden Corral to the growing list of businesses hiring in Connecticut.  It joins Pratt and Whitney, who plans to bring 8,000 jobs to the state, along with Sikorsky and Electric Boat.

This, after Connecticut learned General Electric was leaving the state and taking hundreds of jobs with it.

We took a look at the state’s employment numbers which have bounced back from a rough patch last year.

Back in September 2015, Connecticut’s unemployment rate was 5.3 percent.  By June of last year, it increased to 5.8 percent. This September, we are back down to 5.4%. It’s just a tenth of a percent higher than the same time last year.

“If you take a look at the unemployment rate, it’s not that bad,” said David Cadden, a Quinnipiac University Professor Emeritus from the Department of Entrepreneurship and Strategy, “But it would be more effective if we can look at what types of jobs are we creating.”

There’s been a boom of seasonal hiring.

UPS has announced it’s looking to hire 2,400 people in Connecticut for a combination of seasonal, part-time and permanent jobs.

Nationwide, the company plans to hire 9,5000 people to help with holiday packages.

UPS says salaries start at $10.15 per hour for package and driver-helper jobs. Pay for package car drivers starts at $18.75 per hour and $26 per hour for tractor-trailer drivers.

According to UPS, these seasonal jobs can lead to permanent jobs.

Back at Golden Corral, the interviews are already underway and so were the hopes for a new job.

“It’s going to be successful!” said Rodriguez.

An application to apply to the Milford Golden Corral can be found on the restaurant’s Facebook page – Golden Corral Milford Connecticut.
