How to save money on Halloween treats

NEW HAVEN, Conn. (WTNH) — Halloween is less than a week away.  Your kids likely have their costumes but many people wait until the last minute for one important detail. You know when you have a lot of kids in the neighborhood  that you’re going to have to stock up on the sweet stuff and it’s not usually cheap but I came up with a few ideas for you to stretch your dollar.

When you head out to shop, look for the least expensive candy first. Candy corn and  sweet tarts tend to be affordable. You can save money if these are the bulk of your bowl. Then, you can just get a few other items to mix in so there’s a variety.

Take advantage of buy one get one deals in your local circulars and here’s something different: popcorn!  Make some popcorn and put them in cute Halloween bags for an original inexpensive treat.

Sugar cookies are also cheap to bake.  You can whip up a batch of those and hand homemade cookies out instead.

And a bonus if you have young kids: after you take them trick or treating earlier in the night you can re-purpose some of the candy they don’t want. Throw it in your handout bowl for the big kids who come later.
