Let those opinions about water usage flow, public forums this week

NEW BRITAIN, Conn. (WTNH) — Environmental officials want opinions to flow about water at public forums being held over the next three days.

With the current drought conditions, conservation is on the minds of many. News 8 found some folks who had some creative ways to conserve.

“I don’t take any showers,” said West Hartford’s Charles Hendel jokingly, “[I] shower quickly, as fast as I can.”

“If they’re [faucets] dripping, shut them off because you’re wasting water,” Hendel’s wife Daria said.

Those are some of the ideas the Public Utilities Regulatory Authority may hear Tuesday. They’re hoping folks will come out to the public hearing to help them craft the state’s first water plan.

“Water is the most underestimated resource that we have. People don’t realize until they don’t have it,” said PURA’s Vice Chairman John Betkoski III.

It’s a bill the Water Planning Council has been working on since 2014. They’re trying to craft a 50 year timeline to tackle h20 in the state. The focus is everything from economic development to recreation, and of course the drought.

Betkoski says they’re looking at things such as, “using it properly. That we’re not using potable drink water for economic development in situations we don’t need to, when we’re looking for recreation when we need to, when we’re looking most importantly at public consumption.”

If you’d like to voice your opinion, the first three meetings will be held at the following times and locations:

Tuesday, October 25: 6:00 – 8:00 PM

Southeastern CT Council of Governments, 5 Connecticut Avenue, Norwich.

Wednesday, October 26: 1:00 – 3:00 PM

Hearing Room 1 at PURA, 10 Franklin Square, New Britain.

Thursday, October 27: 6:00 – 8:00 PM

Room 205 of the Southbury Town Hall, 501 Main Street South, Southbury.
